Audience effects theory
1) Write a definition of a passive audience Audiences who take in information from the media (watch and observe).
2) Write a definition of an active audience Audiences who interact with the media they consume
3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory Passive audiences who take in information from the producer as if it was injected into their minds. Assumes no individual difference in audience members
4) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and why it fits that particular audience use/gratification Information/Surveillance: News Learning new information about events happening. Diversion /Entertainment: Shows Entertaining people as a way to forget about other problems. Relationships: Love island The show is based on relationships and people have a strong bond with certain characters. 5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above). The video of Blue Planet is very educating to people who like nature and work jobs to do with the ocean. The are many sea animals and the clip is full of information that people can gain and benefit from the sea. This video is diversion and entertainment as it brings you in and shows you new animals that have been discovered and the way they move, act and look. Therefore, people may feel visceral pleasure as they are learning and understanding new creatures that are in the earth but don't know about.
